The 13-story tower, later known as the South Tower, added 264 guest rooms to the main hotel, effectively increasing the property's total capacity to over 800 rooms. The tower was constructed as a complement to the original postmodern high-rise and was critical in establishing the hotel as a major convention hub for Silicon Valley. The project was complex, requiring the historic Hotel Montgomery to be physically moved to accommodate the new construction, allowing the Fairmont to meet the demand for luxury accommodations and expanded convention facilities.
